Rink Project

School Council Update - December 8, 2017

Dear RPPS Families,

It has been a busy start to the 2017-2018 school year!  Please take a moment to read through the following updates.

Rockcliffe Rink Project:

In development for years, the Rockcliffe Rink Project (a.k.a. "The Sports Pad") could be close to being a reality. This project, lead by the Rockcliffe Hosers and supported by the City, will see a permanent sports pad and associated pavilion built on the City land where the temporary rink is installed each year. This new sports pad will serve as a rink in the winter (not chilled) and as a play surface for other sports the rest of the year. The pavilion will provide a space to put on skates, washrooms, and will be a comfortable place to gather in general. For more on the project please visit this link: https://www.therockcliffehosers.com/

This is an exciting project for the community, especially for area youth, and given the proximity to RPPS, School Council is working closely with the Hosers and the other stakeholders to work out the details. Of note, the project will require the full City lot on which a portion of the soccer field and track are located. Additionally, the planned location of the pavilion has created concerns for the school regarding increased activity near the school during school hours, and line of sight supervision considerations if the school is to continue to use the City property for recess and other outdoor activity.

How we address these concerns, and how we might relocate and resize the field, and track (if the track can be kept) fully onto school property is being discussed in a working group consisting of representatives from the School Board, School Staff, School Council, the Hosers, the Rockcliffe Park Residents Association, and Rockcliffe Park - Lindenlea Soccer. While there are issues to work out, there are also opportunities, such as using backfill from the project to improve the grade and drainage of the field, or possibly adding lighting at the back of the school. Of course of greatest benefit, we hope to have the new facility available to RPPS students during the school day.

The Hosers are looking at Summer 2018 for the start of construction and School Council will keep the school community informed as the project develops. For questions or concerns, you can contact Dave Mackie, School Council Chair, at councilchair@rockcliffeparkps.com or Principal Sioufi Guarna at katia.sioufi.guarna@ocdsb.ca. We will also be discussing the rink project at School Council meetings throughout the year, or you may contact the Rockcliffe Hosers directly at therockcliffehosers@gmail.com.
